Captivate Module

THE PROJECT

For this project, I developed a practical, text-heavy eLearning module using Adobe Captivate, centered on the South Slavic ethnic groups. While my original vision included interactive elements like videos and higher-level media to engage learners and accommodate various learning styles, the stakeholder requested a simpler approach, preferring a format that relied heavily on text. As a learning designer, I aim to avoid text-heavy designs due to visual accessibility concerns, but I recognized the need to compromise to deliver a product that aligned with the stakeholder’s preferences. Despite the constraints, the module remained dynamic and effective, featuring an interactive map where learners could explore key cultural aspects of each ethnic group. Each section concluded with a brief knowledge check, and the module wrapped up with a summative quiz to reinforce understanding.

SPECIFICATIONS

The module was designed with simplicity and functionality in mind while still incorporating elements of thoughtful learning design. The stakeholder’s preference for minimal media required careful structuring of text-based content to ensure clarity and learner engagement. The interactive map, though text-driven, acted as a focal point to organize information and provide learners with autonomy in navigating topics. Each topic-based section included brief descriptions paired with targeted knowledge checks, helping learners reinforce their understanding step by step. While the design avoided multimedia like videos, the project adhered to key instructional design principles, ensuring that learners could interact with and retain the material effectively.

MY APPROACH

My approach balanced the stakeholder’s preference for simplicity with my commitment to creating an engaging and accessible learning experience. By applying Cognitive Load Theory, I segmented content into manageable chunks, reducing cognitive strain and maintaining focus on core topics. The interactive map allowed learners to explore at their own pace, aligning with Constructivist Learning Theory by fostering autonomy and engagement. Though I would have included richer media to support multiple learning modalities, the text-heavy approach served as an exercise in adaptability, demonstrating how even a simplified design can effectively incorporate sound learning principles. This project highlighted the importance of compromise and creativity in delivering a product that meets both learner needs and stakeholder expectations.
